Western Correctional InstitutionType/FeaturesPrison Garden Address13800 McMullen Highway, SW ContactWilliam Jewell,
Volunteer Activities Coordinator Staff and volunteers at Western Correctional Institution have created a Peace and Meditation Garden for the inmates and staff at the medium-security prison. Until this garden was completed, there was no place for the chaplain to take inmates when informing them of traumatic events in their families' lives. This garden now provides a place of solitude and safety. This project would not have taken place without the commitment of the warden, staff members, inmates, and community volunteers. A fountain is the focal point of the sacred space, with a tree of hope planted in the middle of the fountain. Also present are benches for rest and reflection, a Well of Unspoken Truths for dropping written thoughts into a well which only the writer can read, a human sundial, and a newly added gazebo that acts as a gathering place for the staff and inmates.
